What Is a Plantar Fibroma?

A plantar fibroma is a benign fibrous nodule that forms within the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot. Unlike plantar fasciitis, which involves inflammation across the fascia, a plantar fibroma is a distinct mass that can be felt underfoot. These nodules often grow slowly, creating increasing pain with standing, walking, and wearing shoes. Plantar fibromas can occur in one or both feet and tend to resist conservative treatments over time.

Many patients are told their only remaining option is surgical removal. However, surgery carries a high recurrence rate, often exceeding 50 percent, and can leave patients with prolonged recovery and new scar tissue complications.

How LDRT Treats Plantar Fibroma

Low-dose radiation therapy targets the fibroblast activity responsible for nodule growth. By delivering a precisely calibrated series of treatments to the affected area, LDRT reduces inflammation, slows or halts fibroma progression, and can soften existing nodules over time.

Treatment is completely noninvasive. Each session takes only a few minutes, requires no anesthesia, and involves no downtime. Most patients receive a total of 10 sessions delivered over two treatment blocks, typically separated by six to eight weeks. Many patients experience meaningful pain reduction within weeks of completing their first block.

Who Is a Candidate for LDRT?

LDRT is particularly well suited for patients who have already tried other approaches without adequate relief. If you have undergone cortisone injections, custom orthotics, physical therapy, or even surgical excision with recurrence, LDRT offers an evidence-based alternative that addresses the underlying fibrotic process rather than merely managing symptoms.

Candidates include patients with symptomatic plantar fibromas confirmed by physical exam or imaging. LDRT can also be appropriate for patients who want to avoid surgery or are not good surgical candidates due to other health considerations.

What to Expect at Heelex

Your first visit begins with a consultation and clinical evaluation. If LDRT is appropriate for your condition, we develop a personalized treatment plan. Each radiation session is brief and painless. You remain fully clothed, and the treatment is delivered with pinpoint accuracy to the fibroma site only. There is no recovery period — patients return to normal activity immediately after each session.

Results develop gradually over the weeks following treatment as the inflammatory and fibrotic processes respond to the radiation effect.
