What Is TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly called TMJ or TMD, affects the joints and muscles that connect your jawbone to your skull. Symptoms include chronic jaw pain, difficulty chewing, clicking or popping sounds when opening and closing the mouth, earaches, and persistent headaches. The condition can be caused by arthritis, teeth grinding, jaw injury, or chronic inflammation within the joint.

For many patients, TMJ is not just an inconvenience. It disrupts sleep, makes eating painful, and affects quality of life. Standard treatments like oral splints, cortisone injections, physical therapy, and even surgery often provide only temporary or incomplete relief.

How LDRT Treats TMJ

Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) works differently from the treatments you may have already tried. Rather than masking symptoms with medication or forcing structural changes through surgery, LDRT targets the underlying inflammatory process within the temporomandibular joint.

LDRT delivers precise, low-energy radiation to the inflamed tissue surrounding the joint. This stimulates a natural anti-inflammatory response at the cellular level, reducing swelling and pain at the source. Treatment sessions are brief, typically lasting only a few minutes, and are performed on an outpatient basis with no anesthesia, no needles, and no recovery time.

Patients often begin noticing improvement within a few weeks of completing their treatment course, which usually consists of six sessions spread over two to three weeks.

Who Is a Candidate for LDRT?

LDRT for TMJ is specifically designed for patients who have not found lasting relief through conventional approaches. You may be a candidate if:

- Cortisone injections provided only short-term improvement or stopped working entirely
- Physical therapy and oral splints have not resolved your symptoms
- PRP or stem cell therapy did not deliver the results you expected
- You had surgery but still experience significant jaw pain
- You want to avoid additional invasive procedures or long-term medication use

At Heelex Surprise, we see patients every week who thought they had exhausted their options. LDRT offers a proven alternative grounded in decades of clinical evidence from Europe, now available right here in Surprise, Arizona.

What to Expect

Your first visit begins with a consultation to review your history and confirm that LDRT is appropriate for your condition. Treatment planning is straightforward, and most patients begin their sessions within days.

Each session takes only minutes. You lie comfortably while the targeted radiation is delivered to your jaw area. There is no pain during treatment and no downtime afterward. You can return to your normal activities immediately.

Most patients complete six sessions over two to three weeks. Results typically develop gradually over the weeks following treatment as the inflammatory response subsides.
